You received a Notice of Violation & Order to Abate… Now what?

So you received a Notice of Violation & Order to Abate. Where do you begin in remedying this violation to avoid fines and penalties?

Here are some actions to take in order to ensure your Notice of Violation & Order to Abate are cleared up in a timely manner.

  1. Identify the hazard that is listed in your Notice of Violation. Take “before” pictures of the hazard on your property.

  2. Determine a means to clear the cited hazard from your property. You can do this by completing the work yourself or hiring a contractor to perform this service. Be sure to abide by the referenced ordinances and specifications listed in the Order to Abate.

  3. Complete the hazard removal and/or abatement within 30 days of the notice date. If more time is required, contact the inspector designated to your property to notify him/her of a timeline for the work to be done.

  4. Once work is complete, take “after” pictures of your property.

  5. Notify the Office of Hazard Reduction of hazard removal and/or abatement completion, including “before” and “after” documentation.

  6. Schedule routine maintenance of your property in order to keep it safe and avoid receipt of a Notice of Violation & Order to Abate in the future.
